Reactive maintenance, rather than proactive, is still the most common maintenance strategy that Jeff Shiver, a founder of People and Processes, sees in his nearly 30 years working in reliability. “Sixty percent of organizations are still reactive,” says Shiver. “People can hear about information on RCM and similar methodologies, but they can’t implement it on their own.”
Of those organizations that do attempt reliability centered maintenance, seventy percent of them fail to sustain the effort, says Shiver. The challenge isn’t doing the training or planning. It is implementing and sustaining.”
This is where People and Processes comes in. With a little education—even in the form of a public class Shiver’s company offers—organizations can start to work smarter and more efficiently. “Our plan always starts with education to show what is possible. We get them on the same page and all talking same language,” says Shiver. “From there, we move on to conducting the analysis with our facilitators or providing coaching and mentoring to the organization’s facilitators so that the organization can implement the analysis findings to gain business results.”
For Shiver, his goal is always the same, “I want to provide enhanced solutions that resolve the struggles that everyday organizations face with unreliable equipment. We often talk about the costs of downtime to organizations, but we have to realize there is a human cost, too when organizations lack a proactive focus.”
To put it simply, Shiver and his organization provide solutions to end the struggle that comes with reactive environments. The results of deploying his methodologies are anything but simple, though. With one organization Jeff worked with, the organization was able to return $1.8MM to the site from the maintenance budget by using RCM to drive improvements in work execution management.
While these solutions can take years to implement, Shiver says some changes can be more immediate. With another client, he eliminated over 1000 PMs (planned maintenance scheme) on three similar machines and increased the machine availability from 65 percent to 95 percent in a matter of weeks.
Shiver attributes immediate success to the reframing some organizations experience after some initial education. “They see a path forward where none was apparent to them previously within their sphere.”
Changes can affect an organization’s whole operation. “Departmental silos get broken down, and everyone aligns to common objectives. Once the physical changes to the operation and maintenance of the equipment are implemented, the business results follow.”
This is why Shiver tells organizations that even if they never intend to develop an RCM program, simply understanding the components and approach from learning the RCM methodologies enables people to drive significant improvement.
What Shiver appreciates most about his work is connecting with people, especially when he facilitates “aha moments.” These moments extend well beyond maintaining physical assets. “Over my career, I have helped many organizations transition to provide a better and safer work environment. Instead of having to spend their time addressing the reactive chaos, they have more time for family to improve the work-life balance.”
